Sociolinguistique dans les archives coloniales Van den Avenne, Cécile. - : University of Guelph, School of Languages and Literatures, 2022. : Érudit, 2022 BASE Show details 38 The Privilege of Voice as a Criterion for Sociolinguistic Inequalities Weirich, Anna-Christine. - : University of Guelph, School of Languages and Literatures, 2022. : Érudit, 2022 Abstract: Drawing on a theoretical framework for describing sociolinguistic inequalities with the notions of scope and access, the idea of voice can be used to define the aim of language learning processes as strategies to overcome sociolinguistic inequalities and marginalization. Understood in the metaphorical use of “being able to speak” and “to be heard” as used by Dell Hymes, having a voice must be analyzed from an intersectional perspective as a privilege. Studying the example of a mobile speaker and her successive attempts to find voice in different linguistic relations, reveals that the listener and their attitude have to be included in discussions of the conditions for having voice. For the rigor of sociolinguistic arguments, voice should be reserved for use on an abstract level while drawing on other (sociolinguistic) notions in empirical analysis that can describe concrete manifestations of linguistic inequalities. ; Dans un cadre théorique destiné à décrire les inégalités sociolinguistiques sur la base des notions d’accès et de portée, la notion de voix peut définir le but des processus d’apprentissage de langue comme stratégies pour surmonter certaines inégalités sociolinguistiques et la marginalisation. Dans le sens métaphorique de ‘pouvoir parler’ et d’’être entendu’ comme le propose Hymes, avoir une voix doit être analysé comme un privilège et dans une perspective intersectionnelle. L’analyse des discours d’une locutrice en mobilité et de ses efforts successifs pour trouver une voix dans des relations sociolinguistiques différentes souligne la nécessité d’inclure les attitudes de son interlocuteur/-trice dans l’analyse. Afin d’assurer la rigueur de l’argumentation sociolinguistique, nous postulons que la notion de voix devrait être réservée à des discussions sociolinguistiques théoriques plutôt abstraites, au profit d’autres notions ancrées dans l’analyse empirique pour décrire des manifestations concrètes d’inégalités linguistiques.
